We provide one-on-one legal counseling and representation. Services focus on issues of: housing, employment, student rights, immigration, family law, and consumer protection.

Housing Improvement Program (HIP)

Helps people fight unlawful evictions and rent increases and get relief from uninhabitable living conditions.

  • Legal help for all aspects of the landlord-tenant relationship from the lease to the return of the deposit
  • Legal advice for tenants who have received an eviction notice
  • Advocacy for repairs and to relief from uninhabitable housing
  • In pro per advice including the preparation of responses to unlawful detainers
  • Representation for lawsuits against slumlords
  • Educational workshops

Worker Advocacy Project

Helps low-wage workers fight unlawful working conditions.

  • Legal help for wage claims, discrimination, and workers' compensation
  • Advocacy for day laborers who receive tickets from the OPD
  • Employment rights workshops
  • Leadership development trainings

Student and Parent Rights Services

Help to ensure the success of youth in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) and increase opportunities upon graduation. Through educational and legal services, we aim to:

  • Reduce youth truancy, drug abuse, gang affiliation, and drop-out rate while increasing school attendance, participation, literacy, academic achievement, self-esteem, and graduation rates
  • Bridge the cultural and language gap between low-income, monolingual Spanish-speaking parents and the OUSD
  • Ensure that the OUSD adheres to fair policies that protect the rights of parents and youth
  • Provide legal representation for youth/parents
  • Conduct educational workshops, a Youth Leadership Academy from Sep-June and a Parent Leadership Committee for immigrant parents.

Immigration Law Clinics

Educates immigrants and their families about their rights and helps them become citizens.

  • Free immigration law clinics
  • Citizenship orientation workshops

Family Law Clinics

Counsel and educate people in abusive relationships.

  • Free family law clinics.
  • Domestic violence women's support group conducted by the Family Violence Law Center.

Consumer Protection

Helps people understand their telecommunication rights.

Lawyer Referral Service (LRS)

Connects people to attorneys who can help We refer people to Spanish-speaking attorneys who meet specific qualifications.
